Meet Jovelt
For Jovlet Achieng, the journey to her final year of high school has been a long road paved with both deep trials and divine interventions. Her story with Gethsemane Garden Christian Centre began over a decade ago, in 2015, when she was vetted and joined the school as a small Grade 1 student. At the time, her family was living in a homestead encircled by poverty and a sense of hopelessness. Jovlet was the fifth born of six siblings, growing up in a house where the warmth of a father’s presence was only a memory from before she was born. Having passed away before her arrival, her father’s absence left a void that was filled by the tireless strength of her single mother.
Life at home was never easy. With no formal job, Jovlet’s mother became the sole breadwinner, depending on the grueling work of airing sardine fish from other people’s boats to provide for her large family. Feeding and educating six children on such meager earnings was an almost impossible task. Most of Jovlet’s siblings were still young and in lower school, and the weight of their situation meant that children would often miss classes because there was simply no money for school levies. Despite these “tough times” during her childhood, Jovlet’s mother fought to ensure basic needs were met, but the quality of life was a constant struggle against a tide of limited resources.
When Jovlet joined the GGCC family, she brought with her a quiet determination that soon began to flourish. Shortly after joining, she received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and she credits this spiritual foundation as the moment her life truly began to change. “Christ, the hope of glory,” brought a light into her life that poverty could not extinguish. Over the next eleven years, Gethsemane became much more than a school; it became her “home away from home.” Because she lacked the love and attention of a father in her personal life, she found a restorative kind of parental care in the halls of GGCC. She speaks with profound gratitude about the highly favorable student-teacher relationships, noting that the love she experienced from her teachers and classmates was the very thing that healed her heart and allowed her performance to grow to exemplary heights.
However, the path was not without its shadows. During her adolescent years, Jovlet faced significant challenges, including being mocked by those around her. Yet, she refused to let the noise of the world drown out her purpose. She put determination and persistence at the forefront, managing to remain one of the top girls in her class. When the time came for her primary national exams, she passed with “flying colors.” While Jovlet had achieved the stellar marks required for a national school placement, she reached a beautiful moment of clarity regarding her next steps. Understanding the weight her mother carried as the sole provider, especially with older siblings already pursuing university degrees, Jovlet felt a deep peace about staying within the family that had raised her since Grade 1. Rather than pursuing a distant school, she selflessly chose to continue her journey at Gethsemane Garden High School. Her family was filled with delight at this transition, as it was not just a relief to their limited resources, but a homecoming. Jovlet realized that the foundation of love she had already built at GGCC was the perfect environment for her to flourish during her final four years of high school.
It was within this supportive environment, specifically in the Home Science department, that a new passion was born. Inspired by her Home Science teacher and the specialized resources provided by the school, Jovlet fell in love with sewing and garment construction. This has shaped a unique dual dream for her future: as she prepares for her final national exams in Grade 12, she aspires to become a Doctor who can treat and heal the sick in her community. Alongside her medical career, she plans to have a “side hustle” as a Fashion Designer. This is not merely for business, but a mission—she dreams of designing and making clothes for needy children, widows, and widowers, ensuring that those who feel forgotten are clothed in dignity.
Beyond the classroom and the sewing machine, Jovlet has emerged as a formidable leader. Having served as a prefect in various classes, she has led by example, showing her fellow learners what is possible when you move with the Lord. She also envisions herself as a motivational speaker, specifically for women and girls who feel discouraged by their problems. She wants them to feel recognized, heard, and empowered, as she is a staunch believer in the empowerment of the girl child.
As she nears the finish line of her high school journey, Jovlet sends a special token of appreciation to her sponsors, Mr. Vince Eaton and Mrs. Martha Eaton, who have stood by her throughout her time at Gethsemane. She believes no amount of “thank yous” can explain the joy she feels for the moral, academic, and spiritual teachings she has received.
To Jovlet, GGCC is the institution God used to transform her from a hopeless child into a responsible, visionary woman. Her life stands as a true indication that our God is faithful, able to take the most difficult beginnings and stitch them into a future full of promise and glory.
As Jovlet stands on the threshold of her final National Exams, she is no longer the girl “encircled by poverty,” but a young woman encircled by purpose. Her journey from the shores of the lake to the corridors of Gethsemane Garden High School is a living tapestry—woven with the threads of her own resilience and the unwavering support of the GGCC family. She has discovered that while her beginnings were defined by what she lacked, her future will be defined by what she gives. Whether she is healing a patient in a hospital ward or stitching a garment for a child in need, Jovlet carries with her the transformative love she found here. She is a reminder to us all that when hope is restored, a child doesn’t just dream of a better life—she dreams of a better world. To look at Jovlet today is to see the faithfulness of God in full bloom; she is a daughter of Gethsemane, a sister to the hopeless, and a bright light to the nation of Kenya.
