When we talk about faith that moves mountains, we see it lived out in the life of Janet Sospeter—a woman whose journey with GGCC spans over fifteen years, and whose story is a living testimony of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to God’s work.
Our first connection with Janet traces back more than 15 years ago, when she met Naphtaly, one of the founders of our ministry, at the church where she served as a minister.
That first meeting stirred something deep in her heart—a burden to visit Gethsemane. Her grandmother hailed from Mfangano Island, specifically the village of Kakiimba—Naphtaly’s own home village. Their shared roots made their connection even more personal.
On one of her visits to see her grandmother, Naphtaly invited her to GGCC. There she met many children—passionate, eager, and beginning to grow in God’s Word. It was a moment that left a lasting imprint on her spirit.
Janet is no ordinary believer. She is a gifted singer, songwriter, and praise and worship leader who has served in the church faithfully for many years. Recognizing her talent, Naphtaly invited her to help turn the GGCC story into song. Janet returned to her church in
Nairobi, sought permission from her elders, and came back to the island. She set herself apart for a season of prayer and fasting, asking God to birth songs for this mission.
God answered. What began as a vision became a reality—an entire album was created. Janet mentored students, accompanied them to the studio, and helped produce the first-ever GGCC album of worship songs—a project made possible through the leadership of GGCC Kenya’s Director at the time, Naphtaly Mattah.
Since then, Janet has never stopped serving GGCC. She has volunteered at CASEM conferences, mentored over 100 praise and worship leaders, mothered countless young believers in the faith, and led numerous revival services at GGCC. Her songs—born over 15 years ago—still echo in our halls, and her influence still shapes the spiritual heartbeat of our ministry.
But Janet’s journey has not been without suffering. She was born with a serious heart condition that plagued her since childhood. She endured childhood trauma, including a crude medical procedure by a relative that ruptured her eardrum while trying to remove an insect from her ear. This caused years of complications—collapsing whenever water entered her ear, and eventually suffering broken collar and thigh bones.
Yet through every trial, she kept serving Christ. In time, she began to preach, sharing her testimony of physical suffering. Though at first unsure how to speak about it, she prayed for courage. During one such message, the Spirit moved powerfully—healing someone in the congregation. Encouraged, Janet pressed deeper in prayer and fasting. In time, she experienced her own miraculous turnarounds. After two open-heart surgeries, she now testifies of healing in her heart, collar bone, hip, and ear.
Janet is also a single parent to two sons, raising them through the generosity of her church family and the provision of God. Though she owned a small piece of land, she never had the resources to build a home of her own. Her entire life has been poured out in service to the Kingdom, often at personal cost. Even in seasons of extreme fatigue—sometimes having to pause mid-ministry to catch her breath—she pressed on.
This year, as we prayerfully considered who to bless through the generosity of our donors, Janet’s name rose to the top. She had just visited the school again when tragedy almost struck—she was stung by millipede hairs hidden in clothing that had been drying in the sun.
The allergic reaction nearly sent her into anaphylactic shock. She was rushed to hospital and treated just in time.
Shortly after her recovery, GGCC had the joy of presenting her with a gift she had never expected—a new home, built on her own land. For the first time in her life, she could turn a key and step into a house she could truly call her own.
Janet is overwhelmed. Through tears, she repeats her gratitude to God, to GGCC, and to everyone who made this possible. She did not see it coming. For her, this home is not just a shelter—it is a testimony that God sees, God remembers, and God rewards faithfulness.
