A Life Transformed by Faith and Education
Blessed Wendy’s journey with GGCC is a powerful testimony of God’s faithfulness and the impact of a loving, supportive community. Her story reflects the life-changing mission of GGCC, made possible through the sacrificial support of our brothers and sisters in the United States.
A Humble Beginning…
Blessed joined GGCC in 2005 at seven years old in Kindergarten 1 (KG1). Having lost her father at the tender age of one and a half years, she entered the institution as a partial orphan with little knowledge of the world around her. As the firstborn in her family, her early years were marked by uncertainty, yet GGCC became the pillar upon which her life would be built.
Before her father’s passing, Blessed and her mother lived in a grass-thatched house that leaked when it rained and was at risk of collapsing. “The house threatened to fall or crumble,” she recalls. Seeing their dire situation, GGCC built them a new home, a place of safety and dignity. “My mother was extremely happy to have an iron-sheet roof like her peers,” Blessed remembers. This act of love and provision reflects the heart of James 1:27, which calls us to care for orphans and widows in their distress.
Her enrollment at GGCC shaped not just her academic journey, but also her moral, spiritual, and emotional growth. From the start, she was embraced by a nurturing environment where faith, discipline, and love were instilled in her. As Madam Joyce Lumumba put it, “Her enrollment in GGCC shaped her life. The love, moral, academic, and spiritual support offered in GGCC has made her who she is today.”
A Spiritual Awakening
Blessed’s faith took root in Grade 5, during the third term, when she made the life-changing decision to give her life to Christ at a Casem Conference. This decision marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to God. She grew in her faith, later becoming a praise and worship leader, a role in which she inspired many through song and service.
Throughout her years in GGCC, she remained steadfast in her Christian Union (CU) membership, demonstrating her dedication to walking with Christ. She lived a life that truly reflected the fear of the Lord, proving that God not only saves but also sustains His children. As Blessed herself says, “GGCC, you have taught your daughter, enriched, improved, elevated, and equipped me for a future I never thought possible.”
Academic Excellence and Leadership
Blessed successfully completed her Grade 8 at GGCC, where she attained an impressive KCPE score of 385, and transitioned to high school, where she continued to excel both academically and spiritually. In 2019, she sat for her Grade 12 examinations and passed with commendable results.
GGCC not only gave her education but also shaped her leadership skills. She served as a class representative (prefect) from Grade 9 to 11 and later rose to the position of Deputy President in Grade 12. It was in this nurturing environment that she learned courage, resilience, and servant leadership—qualities that continue to guide her today.
Recognizing her potential, GGCC continued to support Blessed through the Timothy Scholarship Fund, ensuring that she was able to complete her joint degree in Public Administration and Political Science. “GGCC not only covered my tuition fees but also provided upkeep, making my life in college much easier compared to many other students,” Blessed shares. “For that, I will forever be grateful.” She graduated in December last year, a milestone that she attributes to the grace and favour of God.
Giving Back: From Student to Mentor
What makes Blessed’s story even more remarkable is her decision to return to GGCC to serve. As she waits on the Lord for the next step in her journey, she has taken on the role of House Parent, mentoring and guiding young girls and boys who, like her, found a home in GGCC. She is a role model, sharing her experiences and reminding students that God is able to keep them strong in their faith and help them achieve their life dreams.
Her presence in the ministry is a powerful encouragement to both students and staff. Seeing alumni return to support and uplift others is a profound reminder that GGCC is not just a school—it is a family that nurtures leaders and disciples for Christ. As Madam Joyce Lumumba noted, “Being given the opportunity to serve in GGCC as a House Parent while she waits on the Lord is very encouraging. Seeing our alumni come back to serve, love, and be supportive in the ministry, giving hope to other students just as they were also given hope, is a plus and worth praising God for.”
Blessed herself describes it as a joy to serve the younger students, whom she lovingly calls her “small brothers and sisters.” She considers it an honor to walk alongside them, just as others once did for her.
A Testament to God’s Grace
Blessed Wendy’s story is a true testament to God’s saving, keeping, and sustaining power. Her life is proof that when given an opportunity, children from vulnerable backgrounds can rise above their circumstances and become beacons of hope and faith. She remains ambitious and looks forward to becoming a County Commissioner one day, a dream that GGCC has helped her shape and pursue.
In her own words, “GGCC has not only been my home but my launching pad. Through the love, mentorship, and provision I received, I have become who I am today. To my sponsors, Jack and Susan Hyzack, your generosity has changed my life. To GGCC, you have given me wings, and to God, I give all the glory.”
